Biography of Robert (Bob) Bucknell

Bob Bucknell, c. 1962

English film editor.
Head of Caledonian News Review Ltd. since 1951. Film editing work undertaken at Caledonian Film Editing Services, as the company was later known, included COI (Central Office of Information) news films sent all over the Commonwealth, as well as church missionary films and other "normal" film work. The diverse list of clients also included Associated-Rediffusion (A-R was a predecessor of Thames Television), BBCtv, Jamaican TV, Southern TV, Thomson TV International, TWW, and Grosvenor Films.

Bob, assisted by Jim Elderton, started on The Telegoons project in January 1963. They were still working on it by October 1963, even as the first episodes were being shown on television. In more ways than one, The Telegoons was the most out-of-the-ordinary editing assignment ever to come to Caledonian. Puppet films are shot in short bursts, but jump cuts must be avoided at all costs. Also, The Telegoons required up to thirty opticals in fifteen minutes. Add to this all of the difficulties of fitting the extraordinary dialogue and effects to the picture, and you have the makings of a lot of extra work.

One interesting point is that in 1963, Caledonian's cutting rooms and office happened to be in the On-the-Spot Equipment Ltd. building, also shared in 1963 by Grosvenor Films Ltd. who rented the large attic space used by The Telegoons production.
