Goon Shows Preserved While You Wait... |
||||||
At least 160 episodes of The Goon Show have been preserved, and of these, something like 80 episodes (as of October 2002) are commercially available, mostly on the BBC Radio Collection label. However, although the BBC is inflicting a good flow of new releases on us at present, just a few years back it was only a trickle. During the whole of the 1960s, only four Goon Show LPs were released (on the Parlophone label). Starting in the early 1970s, and continuing through 1985, the release rate improved to the point where one whole LP a year was released (mostly on the BBC Records label). Unfortunately, this rate was not sustained during the latter part of the 1980s, when re-issues of previous LPs on cassette tape were the order of the day. The Goon Show episodes were, in Spike Milligan?s words, ?...being eaked out for a miserable once-a-year airing on cassette? (The Goons the Story, Norma Farnes, ed., p.62). Well, now we have them in reasonable abundance, and in addition to the steam-powered cassette, they are available on the modern digital audio compact disc as well! However, whereas the Goon Show Classics LP records produced during the 1970s and 1980s (BBC Records, volumes #1 through #11) have beautiful colour cartoon sleeve art (which makes them much sought after by collectors), the CDs and cassettes produced in the 1990s mostly have have colour-toned B&W photo covers (see above). |
