The Wonder of Ultra-Kendall-Vision... |
||||||
Much kudos for the increased flow of Goon Show releases goes to BBC sound engineering wizard Ted Kendall who has been scouring the ?length and longth of the known world?, as well as the BBC Sound Archives, to reassemble and digitally remaster new versions of as many of the shows as he can get his hands on. Ted Kendall?s sources for these new recordings include material edited for the BBC?s original radio broadcasts, as well as material edited for the overseas markets (Transcription Services and Transcription Services Reissue versions). Lines that were cut by various producers of the different editions of the shows have in many cases been restored, bringing us shows that are more complete than ever heard before. So, when someone tells you that a particular Goon Show has been ?Tedded?, sit back and give your ears a treat, because that?s as good as it gets! On more than one occasion Ted Kendall has had to supplement the (incomplete) official sources with privately held material. As of January 1999, Kendall has about another 50 or so recordings that can be released (once cleaned up). This could bring the total number of Goon Show releases on CD to about 120 (Goon Show Volumes 1 to 30 in the BBC Radio Collection). The 1976 and 1977 editions of Wilmut and Grafton?s The Goon Show Companion, (the ultimate authority on all Goon matters) list a total of only 45 shows in the BBC Sound Archives. Clearly, this figure needs to be updated, as Old Auntie?s Sound Archives have been restored considerably since then! |
